Beaufort Wind Scale The Beaufort Wind Scale was designed in 1805 by Sir Francis Beaufort, a rear admiral in the British navy, to describe the wind's effect on sailing ships. The scale is a series of numbers from 0 to 17 that indicate wind speed.
